Chillicothe’s historical past is rich in the railroads and the Illinois river. Two railroads cross here, and a railroad bridge spans the Illinois River; hence the tag line of “Chillicothe; Where the Rails Cross the River”.
Nestled in the Illinois River Valley, Chillicothe has beautiful scenery. The riverfront public access includes boat docks, Cutright Park and Eagle Landing. The Observation Tower at Eagle Landing provides a must-see river view! Bald eagles and white pelicans can be seen in the skies throughout the year.
In addition to the riverfront public access, the Chillicothe Park District invites you to indulge in a variety of recreational activities. Experience the exhilarating thrills of Chillicothe Skate Park, cool off at the Santa Fe Park Splash Pad, lose yourself in the serenity of Coal Hollow Park’s nature trails or take in a game of disc golf and enjoy the pool at Shore Acres Park. Continue your drive from Shore Acres Park onto River Beach Drive to get an up close and personal view of the Illinois River, where you just might spot an American Bald Eagle along the way.
